About this Calculator
Compute your weighted course grade from individual assignments and find out what score you need on your final exam to achieve a target grade.
Formula & Calculations
Formula
Weighted Grade = Σ(Grade% × Weight) / Σ(Weight); Final Needed = (Desired% − Current% × (1 − FinalWeight)) / FinalWeightWhere:
- Grade%=Percentage score on an assignment
- Weight=Weight of the assignment as a percentage of the total grade
- FinalWeight=Weight of the final exam as a decimal (e.g., 0.30 for 30%)
Assumptions
- All assignment weights should sum to 100% for accurate results.
- The 'What do I need on the final?' calculation uses the formula: (Desired − Current × (1 − FW)) / FW.
- Final exam weight is entered as a percentage of the total grade.
Calculation Examples
Example 1
Current = (0.85 × 30 + 0.78 × 30) / 60 = 0.815. Needed = (0.80 − 0.815 × 0.6) / 0.4 = 0.7775.
Example 2
(92 × 0.25 + 88 × 0.25 + 90 × 0.50) / 1.0 = 90.0%
Frequently Asked Questions
What if my assignment weights don't add up to 100%?
The calculator uses total weight as the denominator, so it still computes correctly even if weights sum to less or more than 100. However, the result may not reflect the full grade picture.
How accurate is the 'What do I need on my final?' calculation?
The calculation is mathematically precise assuming your current grade and the final exam weight are accurate. However, it does not account for grading curves or extra credit opportunities.
