About this Calculator

Calculate body fat percentage using the official US Army body fat formula and determine pass/fail status based on age and gender standards.

Formula & Calculations

Formula

Male: BF% = 86.010 × log₁₀(waist - neck) - 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76 | Female: BF% = 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip - neck) - 97.684 × log₁₀(height) - 78.387
Where:
  • BF%=Estimated body fat percentage using US Army method
  • waist=Waist circumference measured at the navel (inches or cm)
  • neck=Neck circumference measured just below the larynx (inches or cm)
  • hip=Hip circumference at the widest point (inches or cm, females only)
  • height=Standing height (inches or cm)

Assumptions

  • Uses the official US Army body composition formula per AR 600-9 standards.
  • Measurements should be taken with a standardized tape measure following Army protocol.
  • Pass/fail thresholds follow current US Army age and gender-based standards.

Calculation Examples

Example 1

Inputs:Male, 25 years, Height: 70 in (177.8 cm), Weight: 180 lbs, Neck: 15 in, Waist: 34 in
Result:Body Fat: ~18.5% — PASS (Male 21-27: max 26%)

Using the male formula with waist-neck difference, the result falls well within the 26% maximum for the 21-27 age group.

Example 2

Inputs:Female, 30 years, Height: 64 in (162.6 cm), Weight: 145 lbs, Neck: 13 in, Waist: 30 in, Hip: 38 in
Result:Body Fat: ~28.2% — FAIL (Female 28-39: max 34%)

Wait — actually 28.2% PASSES for females 28-39 (max 34%). The hip measurement contributes significantly to the female calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the US Army body fat standards?

For males: 17-20 years max 24%, 21-27 max 26%, 28-39 max 28%, 40+ max 30%. For females: 17-20 max 30%, 21-27 max 32%, 28-39 max 34%, 40+ max 36%. Soldiers who exceed these must enroll in the Army Body Composition Program.

How is this different from the Navy method?

The Army and Navy use the same underlying formula. The difference lies in measurement technique: the Army measures waist at the navel, while the Navy measures at the narrowest point. Standards also differ between branches.

What happens if a soldier fails the body fat assessment?

Soldiers who exceed body fat standards are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). They receive nutrition counseling, exercise guidance, and must show monthly progress. Continued failure can affect promotions and ultimately lead to separation.
