About this Calculator

Estimate your ovulation date, fertile window, and next period based on your menstrual cycle.

Formula & Calculations

Formula

Ovulation Day = First Day of Last Period + (Cycle Length - 14) | Fertile Window = Ovulation Day - 5 to Ovulation Day + 1
Where:
  • LMP=First day of your last menstrual period
  • CL=Average cycle length in days (typically 28)
  • OD=Estimated ovulation day (LMP + CL - 14 days)
  • FW_start=First day of the fertile window (OD - 5 days)
  • FW_end=Last day of the fertile window (OD + 1 day)
  • NPD=Next period date (LMP + CL days)

Assumptions

  • Assumes a regular menstrual cycle with ovulation occurring 14 days before the next period.
  • The luteal phase is assumed to be 14 days for all cycle lengths.
  • Individual cycles can vary month to month; this provides an estimate based on average patterns.

Calculation Examples

Example 1

Inputs:Last Period: January 1, Cycle Length: 28 days
Result:Ovulation: Jan 15, Fertile Window: Jan 10 - Jan 16, Next Period: Jan 29

Ovulation = LMP + 28 - 14 = Jan 15. Fertile window begins 5 days before and ends 1 day after ovulation.

Example 2

Inputs:Last Period: March 5, Cycle Length: 32 days
Result:Ovulation: Mar 23, Fertile Window: Mar 18 - Mar 24, Next Period: Apr 6

Ovulation = LMP + 32 - 14 = Mar 23. Longer cycle shifts ovulation later.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the ovulation estimate?

For women with regular cycles, the estimate is generally accurate within 1-2 days. However, stress, illness, travel, and other factors can shift ovulation. Use ovulation predictor kits or basal body temperature tracking for more precise identification.

When is the best time to try to conceive?

The most fertile days are the 2-3 days leading up to and including ovulation day. Having intercourse every 1-2 days during the fertile window maximizes conception chances. Sperm can survive 3-5 days in the female reproductive tract.

What if my cycle is irregular?

This calculator works best for regular cycles (variation < 3-4 days). If your cycle varies by more than a week, track your cycles for 3-6 months to find your average, and consider consulting a healthcare provider about irregular cycles.
