About this Calculator

Calculate running, walking, or cycling pace per mile and kilometer. Also compute time from pace and distance, or distance from pace and time.

Formula & Calculations

Formula

Pace = Time ÷ Distance | Time = Pace × Distance | Distance = Time ÷ Pace
Where:
  • Pace=Time per unit distance (min/km or min/mile)
  • Time=Total elapsed time in minutes
  • Distance=Total distance in kilometers or miles

Assumptions

  • Assumes a constant pace throughout the entire distance.
  • Conversions between miles and kilometers use 1 mile = 1.609344 km.
  • Time inputs are converted to total seconds for precision before calculation.

Calculation Examples

Example 1

Inputs:Distance: 5 km, Time: 25:00 (25 min 0 sec)
Result:Pace: 5:00 min/km (8:03 min/mile)

25 minutes ÷ 5 km = 5 minutes per km. Converted to miles: 5 × 1.609 = 8.045 min/mile ≈ 8:03 min/mile.

Example 2

Inputs:Known pace: 6:00 min/km, Distance: 42.195 km (marathon)
Result:Time: 4:13:10 (4 hr 13 min 10 sec)

6 min/km × 42.195 km = 253.17 minutes = 4 hours, 13 minutes, 10 seconds for a full marathon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good running pace?

A 'good' pace varies by fitness level, age, and distance. For a 5K, beginner runners typically pace 7:00-8:30 min/km, intermediate runners 5:30-7:00 min/km, and advanced runners 3:30-5:00 min/km. Use this calculator to track your personal progress over time.

How do I use pace to predict race times?

Once you know your pace for a given distance, multiply it by the target race distance to estimate your finish time. For example, if you run 5K at 5:30 min/km, a 10K would be approximately 55 minutes. Note that pace typically slows slightly as distance increases.

Why does this calculator show both min/km and min/mile?

Pace is commonly expressed in min/km in most countries and in min/mile in the US and UK. Providing both helps you compare your pace across different tracking apps, race results, and training plans.
